San Antonio is the seventh largest city in the United States and the second largest city in the state of Texas with a population of 1.33 million. Located in the southwestern United States and in the south-central Texas, the city is the county seat of Bexar. In 2011 it was estimated to be the 24th largest urban area in the United States with a population of 2.2 million according to census figures compiled by the US Office of Aboriginal Affairs. San Antonio has the characteristics of other western cities which are sparsely populated and a rate of low density outside the city. It was the fourth fastest growing city in the nation important from 2000 to 2006 and the fifth fastest growth from 2007 to 2008. San Antonio-New Braunfels metropolitan area has a population of 2.14 million in US-based 2010 census, making it the 25th largest metropolitan area in the United States and the third largest in Texas.

San Antonio has a strong military presence, which is home to Fort Sam Houston, Lackland Air Force Base, Randolph Air Force Base and Brooks City-Base, with Camp Bullis and Stanley the camp outside the city.
