Located in Fairfield County, the city had an estimated population of 144,229 in the 2010 census in the United States  and is the heart of Greater Bridgeport. The city is part of the Greater New York City Combined Statistical Area is the fifth largest city in New England. Bridgeport is also the center of the 41st largest urban area in the United States, just behind Austin, Texas (40th). The city is marked by its commitment to its residents, famed circus-promoter and once mayor of PT Barnum. Barnum built three houses in the city, and housed his circus in town during the winter.

Other than Black Rock and Brook lawn shares that were originally part of the City of Fairfield, Bridgeport was originally a part of the town of Stratford. The first permanent English settlement west bank of the river Pequonnock was somewhere between 1639 and 1665 and was appointed Pequonnock. This village was named Newfield some time before 1777. More and more people settled in the hinterland and to the west and the area became officially known as Stratfield in 1701, probably because of its location between the existing cities in Stratford and Fairfield. During the American Revolution, Bridgeport was a center of privateering. In 1800, Newfield had rented in the village as the City of Bridgeport and Bridgeport township in 1821, including more Stratfield, were combined. Finally, Bridgeport, was leased to the city in 1836.
