More and more people settled in the hinterland and to the west and the area became officially known as Stratfield in 1701, probably because of its location between the existing cities in Stratford and Fairfield. During the American Revolution, Bridgeport was a center of privateering. In 1800, Newfield had rented in the village as the City of Bridgeport and Bridgeport township in 1821, including more Stratfield, were combined. Finally, Bridgeport, was leased to the city in 1836.
