Located at the base of the Wasatch Mountains thirteen miles (19 km) south of Salt Lake City, Sandy was a likely area of ??early settlement. The area was first used by nomadic bands of Paiute, and Shoshone Bannock Indians who roamed the base of the mountain, as they traveled from their winter home in Utah Lake to their summer fishing at Bear Lake.

First permanent settlers moved into the arena during the 1860 and 1870 due to the availability of land in the less crowded end of the valley south of Salt Lake City. The original platform was essentially a square mile, located on an alluvial terrace from north to south along the eastern edge of the drainage system of the Jordan River and parallel to the mountain. Brigham Young named Sandy City in 1873 for its thirsty soil.
