Isabel, originally called “Elizabethtown” and part of the plot of Elizabethtown, was founded in 1665 by English settlers. The city was not named by Queen Elizabeth I as many people can afford, but for Elizabeth, the wife of Vice Admiral Sir George Carteret, 1st Baronet and one of the two original owners of the colony of New Jersey. She was the daughter of Philip de Carteret, Seigneur of Sark third and Anne Dowse. The city served as the first capital of New Jersey. During the American Revolutionary War, Elizabeth was constantly attacked by British forces based in Manhattan and Staten Island.
